The Author’s Mic™: 10 Affirmations for Indie Authors When It Feels Like Nobody’s Listening
Some days, being an indie author can mess with your head.
You post and barely anybody responds. You release something and the sales do not come. You look at the views, the likes, the comments, the numbers, and start wondering if anybody is paying attention at all.
I know those days because I have them too.
This episode of The Author’s Mic™ is for those days. I shared 10 affirmations I actually use myself when it feels like nobody is listening, nobody cares, or nobody is buying.

My Words Matter Even If the Crowd Is Quiet
I have these affirmations recorded in my own voice.
True story.
I listen to more than 10, but for this episode, I specifically chose the ones that speak to those moments when it feels like you are doing all this work and nobody is paying attention.
The first one says:
My words matter even if the crowd is quiet.
That one matters to me because quiet can make you start creating a whole story in your head.
Nobody commented, so nobody cared.
Nobody shared it, so it was not good.
The book is not selling today, so nobody wants it.
The views are low, so nobody is listening.
But silence does not automatically mean any of those things.
Sometimes the crowd is just quiet.
I Am Building Something Bigger Than Likes and Views
Another affirmation I shared was:
I am building something bigger than likes and views.
As indie authors, we spend a lot of time in spaces where everything is measured.
Followers.
Views.
Likes.
Comments.
Book sales.
Reviews.
Those numbers have a place. I am not going to pretend they do not.
But they cannot become the only way you decide whether what you are building matters.
Because the work is bigger than what happened on one post today.
The right reader may find you next week.
Somebody may hear about your book from somebody else.
A person may have watched your content for months without ever commenting.
You do not always get immediate evidence of your impact.
Silence Does Not Mean Failure
One of my affirmations says:
Silence does not mean failure. It means space for growth.
That is a hard one to remember when you are in the middle of the silence.
Especially when we are constantly looking at everybody else.
Somebody else has more followers.
Somebody else is selling more books.
Somebody else posted something and got hundreds of comments.
Meanwhile, you are sitting there wondering what exactly you are doing wrong.
Maybe there is something you need to change. I believe in looking at what is working and what is not working.
But every quiet period is not proof that you have failed.
Sometimes you are simply still building.
I Don’t Need a Spotlight to Be a Storyteller
This one might be one of my favorites:
I don’t need a spotlight to be a storyteller.
That is important because visibility and value are not the same thing.
You can have a huge audience and have nothing meaningful to say.
You can also have a small audience and write something that changes somebody.
The spotlight does not create the storyteller.
You were a storyteller before anybody knew your name.
You were a storyteller before the book launched.
You were a storyteller before the followers showed up.
And you are still one on the days when nobody seems to be paying attention.
Every Word I Write Is Planting a Seed
Another affirmation:
Every word I write is planting a seed.
We do not always know what happens after somebody encounters our work.
Maybe they buy the book later.
Maybe they recommend it.
Maybe something you wrote sits with them.
Maybe they come back six months from now.
That does not mean you stop paying attention to your strategy. It means you understand that not everything produces an immediate visible result.
Some things take time.
I Honor My Voice Even When No One Echoes It Back
This one is especially important for independent authors.
I honor my voice even when no one echoes it back.
There is a lot of pressure in this space to look around and see what everybody else is doing.
What are people posting?
What books are selling?
What kind of content is getting attention?
What is trending?
And before long, you can start adjusting your voice based on what you think people want to hear.
But your voice still belongs to you when nobody responds.
You have to decide whether you believe in it before the crowd confirms it for you.
I Am Not Invisible. I Am in Progress.
That was number nine.
I am not invisible. I am in progress.
There is a difference.
Building takes time.
Finding readers takes time.
Learning what works takes time.
And sometimes the hardest part is continuing while you are still in the part nobody can see.
The last affirmation I shared was:
This journey is mine, and I’m proud of how far I’ve come.
Sometimes you need to stop looking at how far you still want to go and acknowledge how far you have already traveled.
Not somebody else’s journey.
Yours.
What Can You Do With These Affirmations?
Take them.
Seriously.
Write down the ones that speak to you.
Print them.
Post them somewhere you can see them.
Share them with another author who needs them.
Record them in your own voice and listen to yourself say them back to you.
That is what I do.
Because there are going to be days when being an indie author feels lonely.
On those days, remember:
Your words matter.
You matter.
Somebody wants to hear your story.
And somebody wants to read that book.

Sometimes you are planting seeds you cannot immediately see.
A book can find readers.
