BTA Fridays – Breaking the Algorithm™: Black History Month Can Get You Visibility, But Can It Build Momentum?

Every February, timelines fill up with Black authors, Black-owned businesses, and recommendations to support creators of color. It's encouraging to see that level of visibility, but here's the question I want indie authors to think about:

What happens on March 1?

In this episode of BTA Fridays – Breaking the Algorithm™, we're talking about the difference between temporary visibility and building something that lasts.

Black History Month creates opportunities that don't always exist during the rest of the year. Readers, organizations, media outlets, and bookstores intentionally look for Black voices to highlight, and that's a good thing.

If your book gains attention during February, celebrate it.

Lean into the opportunities.

Take the interviews.

Attend the events.

Meet new readers.

There's nothing wrong with taking advantage of the spotlight when it's available.

The challenge comes when authors rely on those seasonal opportunities as their entire marketing strategy.

One successful month won't sustain your author career for the rest of the year.

Readers need a reason to remember you after the campaigns end.

That means consistently showing up, creating content, building relationships, and continuing to engage with your audience long after February has passed.

A career isn't built during one promotional season.

It's built through consistency.

Algorithms change.

Social media trends change.

Marketing tactics come and go.

Relationships last.

Focus on building genuine connections with readers, bookstores, book clubs, fellow authors, and your community. Those relationships continue creating opportunities long after a social media post disappears from someone's feed.

Your network often becomes your greatest marketing tool.

Black History Month can introduce readers to your work, but it's up to you to give them a reason to stay connected.

Ask yourself:

  • Are readers joining your email list?
  • Are they following your content?
  • Are they coming back for your next book?
  • Are you building a community instead of chasing one viral moment?

Those are the questions that create long-term momentum.

The goal isn't to be visible for one month.

The goal is to build an author platform that continues growing every month of the year.

Use every opportunity to introduce people to your work, but don't stop there.

Keep writing.

Keep showing up.

Keep serving your readers.

That's how momentum is built.

  • Black History Month provides valuable visibility for authors of color.
  • Visibility is an opportunity, not a complete marketing strategy.
  • Consistency creates long-term momentum.
  • Build relationships with readers, not just social media impressions.
  • Focus on creating an author career that extends far beyond one promotional season.
