BTA Fridays™ – Breaking the Algorithm™: Why Authors Won’t Pay to Be in My Magazine

BTA Fridays™ – Breaking the Algorithm™: Why Authors Won’t Pay to Be in My Magazine

I’m launching The Author’s Mic™: The Voice of Independent Authors in spring 2027, and I want to be clear about one decision now: authors will not pay to submit their writing or to be selected for an editorial feature. In this BTA Fridays™ episode, I explain how I want editorial decisions to work, how I hope the magazine will earn money, and what contributors can expect while we build it.

What I Mean by Pay to Play

Some publications charge authors to submit, appear in an issue, or be featured on a cover. That is their choice. It is not the model I want for this magazine.

I want our editorial board to read submissions and decide what to publish based on the work. If your story appears in the magazine, I want it to be because we thought it was worth sharing with readers. If we feature an author, I want there to be a reason grounded in that author’s story, writing, or contribution.

I know how much trust it takes to send your work to someone else. I do not want authors wondering whether their words mattered less than their ability to pay.

Advertising and Editorial Are Different

I intend to seek advertising as the magazine grows. I also hope people will buy issues and subscribe. Those are ways a publication can support its own production.

An advertisement is paid space. Editorial selection is a decision about what belongs in the magazine for readers. I want that distinction to remain visible. An advertiser may pay to reach the magazine’s audience; an author should not have to buy editorial approval.

The magazine needs to operate as a business. Building an audience that readers value—and that advertisers want to reach—will take time. I am starting with that reality in mind.

Will Contributors Be Paid?

I want to be able to pay writers. I want to pay the people who help edit and produce the magazine, too.

I also need to be honest about the beginning. The first four quarterly issues will be a period of building the publication and its readership. I do not expect to be able to pay contributors during that first year. I do not want an author to submit under a mistaken impression about compensation.

The long-term goal is for advertising, subscriptions, and issue sales to support payments to contributors. I cannot promise when that will happen. I can tell you that charging authors for editorial placement is not how I plan to get there.

What I Want This Magazine to Become

I want readers to discover books and writers here. I want independent authors to have a place to submit original work. I want useful information about the indie publishing world and legitimate opportunities to live alongside writing that informs and entertains.

That is the vision I’m working toward with The Author’s Mic™: The Voice of Independent Authors. The first issue is planned for spring 2027, and I will share contributor information as the process takes shape.

Key Takeaways

  • Authors will not pay a fee to submit work or receive editorial placement in the magazine.

  • An editorial board will read submissions and select work for publication.

  • Advertising will be separate from editorial decisions.

  • The first four issues are expected to be unpaid for contributors while the magazine builds.

  • Paying writers and the people producing the magazine is a long-term goal.

Finley’s Journey Spotlight

Finley’s Journey by Jeff Hepner is published under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint as part of The Classroom Creatures Chronicles™. The story grew from authentic conservation experiences and introduces readers to a young trout making his way from a classroom tank toward open water.

The Finley’s Journey Student Workbook extends that work with story-aligned activities about trout life cycles, watersheds, and river stewardship. Producing the book and developing a resource that can be used with it are both parts of the publishing work behind this project.
