BTA Fridays™ – Breaking the Algorithm™: Why Your ISBN Matters More Than Your Likes
What does the number on the back of your book have to do with breaking the algorithm? Plenty, because being an independent author involves understanding the business behind your book before you start posting about it.
In this episode of BTA Fridays™ – Breaking the Algorithm™, I talk about ISBNs, why I purchased my own, and why authors need to understand the free and paid options before choosing one.

What Does an ISBN Do?
ISBN stands for International Standard Book Number. It identifies a specific edition and format of your book.
Your paperback has one ISBN. Your hardcover needs a different one. Other formats or editions may also require separate numbers. One ISBN does not automatically cover every version of the same title.
This may feel like a small detail when you are trying to finish a manuscript or plan a launch. But it is part of the publishing information behind the book readers will buy.
We spend plenty of time talking about followers, visibility, and social media. Authors also need to understand how their books are identified and who is listed as the publisher.
Where Do ISBNs Come From?
Some publishing platforms offer free ISBNs. Amazon KDP is one example. Authors can also purchase their own.
I chose to purchase ISBNs because I publish under Bright Headed Publishing and wanted to have them available for future books. In the United States, Bowker provides ISBNs, and its MyIdentifiers website is where you can purchase and manage them.
You can purchase an individual ISBN or a block. The important part of my decision was having the publishing information managed under my company and having numbers ready for additional projects.

Why Pay When a Platform Offers One for Free?
For me, the reason was control over the publishing information associated with the ISBN.
A platform-provided ISBN comes with that platform’s terms. With KDP’s free print ISBN, the imprint is listed as “Independently published,” and the ISBN can only be used through KDP. An ISBN you purchase yourself allows you to use your own registered imprint information, subject to the applicable requirements.
That does not mean every author needs to purchase ISBNs. It means you need to understand what the option gives you and how it fits your publishing plans.
Do not choose the free option only because it is free. And do not spend money on ISBNs without understanding why you are buying them.

An ISBN Is Not Copyright Ownership
I talked about copyright on Wednesday, and this is where the distinction matters.
An ISBN identifies a book edition and format. It does not establish who owns the copyright to the writing. Using a platform-provided ISBN does not, by itself, transfer your copyright to that platform.
Those are different parts of the publishing process. Authors need to understand each one rather than assume that a number on the book answers every ownership question.
Know where your ISBN came from. Know what publisher or imprint information is attached to it. Know the terms governing its use.
There Is a Business Behind the Book
Social media is only part of being an indie author.
Before you worry about how to get more attention for your book, understand the publishing decisions you have already made. Otherwise, you may find yourself trying to expand distribution or publish another format without knowing what your existing setup allows.
I purchased my own ISBNs because that choice fits the publishing work I am building. Another author may make a different choice.
The point is to make the decision deliberately. Whether you use a free ISBN or purchase one, understand what it means for your book before moving forward.

Finley’s Journey Spotlight
Finley’s Journey by Jeff Hepner is part of The Classroom Creatures Chronicles™ and is published under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint.
The project brings together book production and educational resource development. Its story introduces a young trout and connects readers with trout life cycles, watersheds, and environmental stewardship through authentic conservation experiences.
The companion Finley’s Journey Student Workbook adds ten story-aligned chapters with observation activities, reflection prompts, and a closing stewardship promise. It is an example of planning for how a book can be used beyond the initial reading experience.
