On this episode of The Author’s Mic™, I had the chance to sit down with the fabulous Mariah Ankerman — a romance author who has published 24 books and just signed a contract with Harlequin.
What makes Mariah’s story so powerful isn’t just the number of books she’s written. It’s the journey that got her here — one that started in the most unexpected place: clown skits.
From Clown Skits to Storytelling
Mariah was raised by a professional clown. Long before she could spell, she was writing and planning skits with her mom. “I was writing before I even knew how to spell,” she shared, “and honestly, I still struggle with spelling because I’m dyslexic. That’s why I love my editors and proofreaders so much.”
Even in school, her teachers encouraged her talent. One elementary teacher gave her the first piece of writing advice she ever remembers: “When a character is talking, it goes in quotation marks.” It was a small but pivotal moment that helped Mariah see writing as more than just a hobby.
Building a Career in Romance
Fast forward to today, and Mariah has built a career as a romance author. With 24 books under her belt, she’s proven that consistency and resilience matter more than a “perfect” path. Her persistence recently paid off in a major way when she landed a contract with Harlequin.
It’s a reminder to indie authors everywhere: traditional doors can still open, even if you start outside the system.
Writing With Challenges
Mariah is open about the challenges she faces as a writer with dyslexia and chronic illness. Instead of letting those obstacles stop her, she created systems that work for her. She leaned on editors, proofreaders, and community support to keep producing.
For indie authors, that’s the lesson: you don’t need a flawless process. You need one that’s sustainable for you.
Lessons for Indie Authors
Start where you are. Even clown skits count. Every practice adds up.
Resilience matters. Life circumstances don’t erase your talent — they shape your path.
Volume creates opportunity. Twenty-four books later, Mariah’s consistency built her credibility.
Don’t close doors. Indie work doesn’t disqualify you from traditional success. It can be the foundation for it.
