So You Wanna Write a Book? Start Here (Without Losing Your Mind)

✍🏽 So You Wanna Write a Book? Start Here.

Let’s keep it real—writing a book can feel like climbing a mountain in flip-flops.

You’ve got the idea, the passion, maybe even a strong message… but where the heck do you start?

I get it. That’s exactly why I created the free guide:
👉 So You Wanna Write a Book – A Real-Talk Guide to Getting It Done Without Losing Your Mind

This isn’t one of those fluffy, generic guides. This is the real deal—the stuff no one tells you about writing your book when you’re juggling life, doubt, deadlines, and maybe a day job (or three).

So, you’ve got a book idea—or maybe just that nagging feeling that you need to write one. Either way, you’re in the right place.

Whether this idea has been simmering for years or you just had one of those “you know what would make a good book?” moments, let’s take a deep breath and walk through the starting line together. No fluff, no fear, no overwhelm—just real talk.

🔥 Step 1: Know Your Why

Before you type a single word, ask yourself:
Why do I want to write this book?

  • To share your story?
  • Teach something valuable?
  • Inspire? Entertain? Heal?

Your why is the anchor that’ll keep you grounded when the writing gets hard (and trust me, it will). Don’t skip this part—write your reason down and put it somewhere visible. On the fridge. On your mirror. In your phone notes. Wherever you’ll see it when you feel like giving up.

🧠 Step 2: Write What You Know—or Learn What You Don’t

“Write what you know” is solid advice, but don’t get boxed in by it. You can absolutely write about things you’re curious about—as long as you’re willing to do a little digging.

Research doesn’t have to be scary. It can look like:

  • Watching a documentary
  • Reading a few articles
  • Listening to a podcast
  • Talking to someone with lived experience
  • Visiting a place (in person or virtually)

You’re not writing a textbook—you’re building trust with your reader.

Respect the craft, and the story will respect you back.

✨ Step 3: Write What You Want—Not What You Think Will Sell

Here’s the truth: chasing trends is a shortcut to burnout.

Write the book you want to read. That book that keeps you up at night. That one that taps you on the shoulder when you’re trying to sleep. That’s your story.

And who knows? You might not just have one book in you—this could be the start of a series.

🎯 Step 4: Know Who You’re Talking To

Now that you’ve got your “why” and a direction, ask yourself:

Who am I writing this for?

Don’t overthink it—you don’t need a full-on marketing persona with a favorite Starbucks order. Just get a general sense:

  • Are they looking for inspiration? Escape?
  • Going through something you’ve been through?
  • Need to learn something only you can teach?

Knowing your reader helps you stay focused—just don’t let it box you in.

✅ End-of-Post Checklist:

  • I’ve written down my “why”
  • I’m writing what I know (or committed to learning it)
  • I’ve decided to write what I want, not just what might “sell”
  • I know who I’m writing for
  • I’ve brainstormed or outlined a few key ideas
  • I’ve set a writing goal I can stick with
