The Author's Mic™: Latrea Russ on Disability, Advocacy, and Finding Purpose Through the Hard Things

Some conversations stay with you long after the recording stops.

This was one of those conversations.

This week on The Author's Mic™, I sat down with award-winning author, speaker, disability empowerment coach, and advocate Latrea Russ to talk about disability advocacy, resilience, purpose, and what happens when life forces you to rewrite the story you thought you were going to live.

Latrea's story isn't built on theory or talking points.

It's lived experience.

She speaks openly about navigating disability, raising a child with disabilities, advocating inside systems that often make families fight for resources they should never have to fight for, and discovering purpose in places she never expected to find it.

One of the things I appreciated most about our conversation was how honest it was.

There wasn't any pretending that the work is easy.

Advocacy is exhausting.

Caregiving is exhausting.

Showing up every day for yourself and for the people you love can be exhausting.

But Latrea also reminds us that advocacy matters because people matter.

Families matter.

Representation matters.

And sometimes the person who understands your experience best is the person who's already walked through it themselves.

We also talked about authorship and storytelling.

Stories create visibility.

Stories create understanding.

Stories create community.

Whether you're writing a book, raising awareness, building a business, or advocating for your family, your story has value because someone else is trying to find language for what they're experiencing too.

That's one of the reasons conversations like this matter.

Because somebody listening needs to hear that they're not alone.

  • Advocacy often begins with lived experience.
  • Representation matters, especially for families navigating disability.
  • Your story can become someone else's roadmap.
  • Purpose is not always found where we expected to find it.
  • Community makes difficult journeys more manageable.
  • Visibility creates understanding and understanding creates change.
