The Author’s Mic™: An Indie Author Mind Reset for the Rest of 2026

We are moving into the final months of 2026, and I wanted to begin September with a mind reset.
Becoming an indie author requires more than writing and publishing a book. It requires patience, flexibility, and a strong enough foundation to keep going when the response is quiet, a review hurts, a marketing decision does not work, or somebody tries to take advantage of what you do not yet know.
I am speaking from my own experience. I have published books, marketed them, waited for reviews, lost money, dealt with scams, made mistakes, and built some genuinely valuable relationships along the way.
One of the practices that has helped me stay grounded through all of it is using affirmations.
Watch the full episode:
Affirmations Are Not Magic
Affirmations will not sell your books. They will not edit your manuscript, create your marketing plan, or build relationships on your behalf.
What they can do is help you manage the thoughts behind your decisions.
That matters because the way you speak to yourself can change when your book enters the world. A quiet launch can make you question the quality of your work. Slow sales can make you wonder whether you should continue. Watching another author appear to move faster can make you believe you are falling behind.
None of those thoughts automatically reflects the truth.
Sometimes people do not know your book exists. Sometimes you have not reached the right readers yet. Sometimes the strategy needs to change. Sometimes it simply takes longer than you wanted it to take.
The response may be quiet without the work being worthless.
I Will Not Compare My Journey to What Somebody Else Shows Online
Online comparison is easy because we usually see the result without seeing what it cost.
You do not know how much another author spent. You do not know who they know, what support they had, how long they have been building, or what is happening behind what they chose to show publicly.
You cannot fairly judge your complete journey against somebody else’s selected moments.
That does not mean you should ignore what other authors are doing. You can learn from people without using their numbers as evidence that you are failing.
Your author journey needs to be evaluated against the purpose of your work, the decisions you have made, and the progress you are actually trying to create.
Every Reader Is Not My Reader
Every reader is not your reader, and that is okay.
Authors can spend too much time trying to persuade people who were never interested in the book. That energy could be used to find the readers who already connect with the subject, genre, experience, or conversation the book offers.
Your book does not have to appeal to everybody to have value.
Trying to make it work for everybody can also weaken how you talk about it. When you know who the book is for, you can describe it more clearly, choose better opportunities, and stop treating every uninterested person like a problem you need to solve.
A No Does Not Mean My Book Does Not Belong
You may hear no from a bookstore, book club, event organizer, reader, podcast, or literary platform.
That no does not automatically mean your book does not belong.
It may mean the book does not belong in that particular space. It may not fit the audience, schedule, genre, programming, or current need. It may simply be the wrong opportunity.
Authors have to learn how to hear no without turning it into a statement about the value of the entire book.
Rejection can give you information. It does not have to become your identity.
I Can Change the Plan Without Giving Up on the Goal
Sometimes the platform is not working. Sometimes the audience is different from what you expected. Sometimes a strategy sounded great but produced nothing.
Change it.
Adjusting your plan does not mean you have abandoned the goal. It means you are paying attention to what is actually happening.
There is no prize for continuing to use a strategy that does not work simply because it was the original plan. Flexibility allows you to protect the goal while making better decisions about how you pursue it.
Flexibility is not failure.
I Will Not Make Decisions From Desperation
Desperation is expensive.
It can make an author pay for a service without researching it, accept an opportunity that does not fit, or ignore warning signs because somebody says this is the only chance.
Pressure should make you pause.
A missed opportunity is not always a loss. Sometimes it is the scam you avoided, the money you kept, or the disappointment you did not have to clean up later.
You do not have to say yes because somebody created an artificial deadline. You do not have to pay because somebody promised exposure. You do not have to accept every invitation simply because you want your book to be seen.
Decisions made from fear and urgency can move you farther away from the author career you are trying to build.
Rest Does Not Mean I Quit
You do not have to post every day. You do not have to turn every part of your life into content. You do not have to begin the next book before you have had time to breathe after finishing the last one.
Rest is not evidence that you are unserious.
This work can test you, and constantly producing without recovery will eventually affect the quality of the work and the person doing it.
You are allowed to stop posting for a while. You are allowed to step away after a launch. You are allowed to take a few months and decide what you want to do next.
Rest can help you stay in this work longer. It does not mean you left it.
I Decide What Success Looks Like for Me
If you do not define success for yourself, the publishing industry will do it for you.
It will hand you bestseller labels, follower counts, visibility, and sales numbers and tell you that those are the only measurements that matter.
They may matter to you. They may not.
Maybe you published your book to establish credibility. Maybe it was meant to begin conversations, support your business, create speaking opportunities, or reach a particular group of readers. Maybe your experience could help someone else who is living through something similar.
The reason you created the book should help determine how you measure its success.
Do not let somebody else’s numbers decide whether your book accomplished what you created it to do.
Build the Author Before You Publish the Book
Affirmations will not do the work for you, but they can help you become more intentional about the thinking that guides the work.
Before you build an author career, build the author.
Develop a foundation that can survive rejection, quiet seasons, changed plans, bad decisions, and the pressure to compare your work with what somebody else shows online.
Once the book enters the world, you will be responsible for sustaining it. The manuscript may be finished, but the work of becoming the person who can carry it continues.
Key Takeaways
Affirmations cannot replace the practical work of publishing and marketing, but they can help authors manage the thoughts behind their decisions.
A quiet response does not automatically mean that the book or the author has failed.
Every reader is not your reader, and every rejection is not proof that your book does not belong.
Changing a strategy is not the same as abandoning the goal.
Authors need to define success for themselves before the publishing industry defines it for them.
Publishing With Bright Headed Publishing
A strong publishing plan includes the book, but it must also account for the author who will be responsible for carrying that book into the world.
Bright Headed Publishing works with selected authors who have completed or nearly completed manuscripts and want hands-on support moving from manuscript to market. Depending on the needs of the project, that work may include interior formatting, cover coordination, ISBN assignment under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint, print and eBook distribution setup, launch materials, companion resources, and author-platform support.
This is not a quick upload or a one-size-fits-all publishing package. The goal is to produce a professional book while helping the author build the infrastructure the book will need after publication day.

Finley’s Journey Spotlight
Finley’s Journey shows what can happen when a publishing project is developed beyond the book itself.
Written by Jeff Hepner and published under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint, Finley’s Journey is the first book in The Classroom Creatures Chronicles™. The story follows a young trout from a classroom tank toward open water while introducing young readers to authentic conservation experiences.
The Finley’s Journey Student Workbook extends the story into an educational resource. Its ten chapters mirror the book while helping students explore trout life cycles, watersheds, observation, cause and effect, and river stewardship.
The book created the story. The companion workbook created another way for that story to work in classrooms and communities. That is the kind of long-term thinking authors need before and after publication.
