The Author’s Mic™: Book Clubs for Indie Authors (Visibility, Community, and a Real Strategy)

Book clubs are powerful. Not just as a reader, but as an author.

They read together, discuss together, recommend together, and review together. And when your book lands in the hands of a book club, it doesn’t just get read. It gets talked about.

That conversation can lead to:

  • Real reviews
  • Real referrals
  • Loyal readers
  • Long-term visibility

Why book clubs matter for authors

A lot of authors are trying to build traction one post at a time.

But book clubs create something social media can’t always manufacture: a shared reading experience.

When people read as a group, they don’t just finish the book and move on. They talk about it. They debate it. They remember it.

That’s word-of-mouth.

Book clubs want author access (and that’s an advantage)

Many book clubs would love the opportunity to talk directly with the author.

They want to:

  • Ask questions about the characters
  • Unpack your writing choices
  • Understand your process
  • Tell you what landed (and what didn’t)

That kind of access creates real connection.

And connection is how you build readers that stay.

What you need before you pitch a book club

Getting your book in front of a book club takes intention.

Some book clubs vote on their selections and take it seriously.
Some have rotating curators with a full year planned out.
Some are silent book clubs.
Some meet online.
Some meet in person.

So if you’re going to approach one, be prepared.

Here’s the checklist:

  • Do you have a media kit?
  • Do you have discussion questions ready?
  • Are you willing to do a virtual Q&A?
  • Do you have ARCs available?
  • Can you introduce your book clearly and professionally?
  • Do you know what your follow-up plan is (and how often)?
  • Are you tracking responses?

All of this takes time.

Time is currency.
Your book is currency too.

Treat both like it.

Yes, you can do this yourself

You can absolutely handle this on your own.

You can find book clubs through:

  • Your local library
  • Online searches
  • Eventbrite
  • Facebook groups
  • Instagram and TikTok
  • Bookstores and reading communities

Book clubs are alive and well.

The part that becomes time-consuming is the follow-through:

  • Finding the right clubs
  • Making sure they align with your book
  • Sending a strong first message
  • Following up consistently
  • Tracking who said what, and when

That’s the real workload.
