The Author’s Mic™: Carrie KC West on Finding Publishing Help You Can Trust

Smiling senior woman in blue sweater at home.

Carrie KC West spent four years getting her first book published. Her second took six months, including writing and getting it out. When she joined me on The Author’s Mic™, we talked about what changed, how she now helps other authors, and why finding trustworthy publishing support matters when your money and your time are both on the line.

Helping Authors Bring Their Stories Into the World

Carrie describes herself as a “story doula.” She helps people bring their stories out in two ways: helping them publish their books and helping them examine the personal narratives that may be holding them back.

Her book Life Rewritten grew from her own experience rewriting her narrative. Her storytelling background helped her look at that experience through the structure of a story: the central character, the challenges, and the obstacles that keep appearing.

We talked about how an obstacle does not have to be another person. It could be the economy, an insurance company, or a situation you have to confront. Carrie applies that understanding of storytelling to the way people interpret their lives.

After Life Rewritten, readers asked how to apply the work to specific subjects. That helped lead to Money Rewritten, which explores the stories people carry about money.

Carrie also wanted readers to have the material they needed in one place. She combined her personal stories, self-help material, and workbook exercises rather than requiring readers to purchase separate books to do the work.

When Everybody Has a Publishing Promise

Writing the first book was only part of Carrie’s experience. Once she was ready to publish, the offers started arriving.

People promised to get her published, promote her, and help her become successful. Some of those offers came with prices of $15,000 or $20,000. Meanwhile, she still needed to figure out cover design, layout, marketing, and the other work required to bring the book out.

That is where independent publishing can become overwhelming. You finish a manuscript, but you may not know who handles each part of production or how to evaluate what someone is offering.

Carrie eventually established relationships with professionals she could work with, including a cover designer. By her second book, she had a process and the people she needed. What she learned also became part of the support she offers other authors.

Who Will Deliver What They Promise?

Our conversation came back to trust.

I believe authors need to understand that professional help requires an investment. What that investment looks like will depend on the author and the work. But once you decide to spend money, you need to know who will give you what they say they will.

Carrie described support that brings together cover design, book layout, marketing, and Amazon setup. She explained that her established relationships with service providers help her coordinate that work for authors.

What interested me was the value of having those pieces brought together. An author can find separate professionals, but someone still has to manage the communication and the project.

For many of us, that work happens around a full-time job. We are writing, learning publishing, and trying to market our books in the hours we have left.

Your Time Is Currency

You can do a lot yourself. That does not mean doing it yourself costs nothing.

Finding a cover designer takes time. Finding someone to format your book takes time. Explaining the project, reviewing the work, and coordinating several people takes time.

That is why I talk about treating your time as currency. When you compare publishing support, the price is only one part of the decision. You also have to consider the work you will be managing.

Carrie’s experience made that point concrete. Her first publishing process took years. Her second moved faster because she had learned what she needed and established working relationships.

I appreciate people who take what they have learned and use it to help others. Publishing your own book teaches you plenty, and sharing that experience can help another author understand the work ahead.
