The Author’s Mic™: Kelley Renee and Palm Branch Publishing on Building Community Through Anthologies

One of the things I love most about The Author’s Mic™ is creating space for authors, publishers, and creatives to share their journeys with the indie author community.

In this episode, I sat down with Kelley Renee, an award-winning author, speaker, and publisher, to talk about Palm Branch Publishing, anthologies, author collaboration, and what it really takes to build community in an industry that can sometimes feel very isolating.

Building a Publishing Family

Kelley Renee shared that Palm Branch Publishing was created with a mission to help authors grow, learn, and connect.

Rather than focusing solely on publishing books, Palm Branch Publishing focuses on creating anthologies that bring multiple authors together under a shared theme.

The goal is simple:

Help authors reach new readers while also building relationships with other writers.

As Kelley explained, once an author is accepted into one of their anthologies, they become part of the Palm Branch family.

That means ongoing support, promotion, collaboration, and opportunities to learn from one another.

For many indie authors, that sense of community can make a tremendous difference.

Why Anthologies Matter

One of the most interesting parts of our conversation centered around how anthologies can help authors expand their audience.

Each anthology contains multiple authors, multiple stories, and multiple genres connected by a central theme.

Readers who purchase the anthology may discover authors they never would have found otherwise.

A reader who typically enjoys romance might suddenly discover a science fiction author they love.

A mystery reader may find themselves exploring women's fiction.

Anthologies create opportunities for both readers and writers to step outside their comfort zones.

The Reality of the Indie Author Journey

Kelley and I discussed something many authors experience but don't always talk about:

Writing can be lonely.

When you're building your platform, writing your books, and trying to market your work, it's easy to feel like everyone else has it figured out.

Social media often shows the highlight reel.

What it doesn't always show is the work happening behind the scenes.

Having a community of authors who understand the journey can provide encouragement, accountability, and support when things feel challenging.

Advice for New Authors

Toward the end of the conversation, Kelly shared several pieces of advice for writers who are just getting started.

Write Every Day

Discipline matters.

Whether it's working on a manuscript, journaling, brainstorming, or simply capturing ideas, building a consistent writing habit helps strengthen your skills over time.

Stay Observant

Stories are everywhere.

The people you meet, conversations you overhear, and moments you experience can all become inspiration for future writing projects.

Practice Writing Short Stories

Short stories force writers to be intentional.

You have fewer words to develop characters, build a plot, create tension, and deliver a satisfying ending.

That challenge helps strengthen storytelling skills that carry over into longer works.

Community Creates Opportunity

One of the biggest themes throughout this conversation was the idea that authors don't have to navigate this journey alone.

Whether it's through anthologies, writing groups, podcasts, book clubs, or author communities, collaboration often creates opportunities that isolation cannot.

The indie author journey can be difficult.

It becomes much easier when you're surrounded by people who understand it.
