The Author’s Mic™: Krista Ford on Going From Homeless to World Champion

The Author’s Mic™: Krista Ford on Going From Homeless to World Champion

Krista Ford did not sit down one day and decide she wanted to become an author. She had been journaling for most of her life, documenting experiences that eventually carried her from homelessness to becoming a world-champion athlete. Those journals became the foundation for Krista’s Promise, her self-help spiritual memoir.

Krista joined me on The Author’s Mic™ to talk about the life behind the book, her history in powerlifting and bobsledding, and the consistency it takes to keep moving when the people around you do not understand where you are going.

The Journals That Became Krista’s Promise

Krista has always considered herself an athlete, not a writer. She grew up active, participating in organized sports and competing in everything from track and field to golf. Writing entered her life differently.

She had been journaling for years. Friends and teammates repeatedly told her that she needed to write a book, but she initially dismissed the idea. Eventually, with the help of a friend, those years of journal entries were shaped into Krista’s Promise.

The book tells the story of how Krista went from being homeless to becoming a world champion. It is also rooted in her faith and her belief that everybody has a purpose, even when that purpose is not immediately clear.

Krista did not publish the book simply to document what happened to her. She wanted to share the parts of her story that might help someone else keep going. That required telling the truth about experiences that even some of her closest friends and family members did not know.

There is a difference between privately recording your life and deciding to let other people read it. Krista crossed that line because she believed the story could give somebody hope.

What Makes Someone an Athlete?

During our conversation, I asked Krista a question that I have thought about in my own life: What actually makes someone an athlete?

People can play sports without identifying themselves as athletes. Krista has always known herself as an athlete because movement, training, competition, and organized sports have been part of her life since childhood.

She eventually competed in two very different sports.

Krista has spent more than 40 years in powerlifting and continues to compete nationally and internationally. She is a 14-time national champion, eight-time world champion, and a holder of national and world records.

She was also a member of the original U.S. Women’s Bobsled Team and became the first Black woman on the team. She has since retired from bobsledding, but her place in the sport remains part of her history as a pioneering athlete.

That athletic background also shaped the way she approached her book and the life behind it.

Consistency Is What Moves You Forward

As Krista talked about her career, one word kept coming to mind: consistency.

People often begin with good intentions. We decide that we are going to write the book, build the business, change our lives, or pursue an opportunity. Then the results do not come as quickly as we expected.

Nobody is watching. The validation is missing. The progress feels too slow. We stop.

Later, we see someone else several steps ahead and wonder how they got there. Sometimes the answer is not that they were more talented or better connected. They simply did not stop.

Krista agreed that consistency is part of every athletic journey. Regardless of the level at which an athlete competes, improvement requires intentional and repeated work.

The same is true for authors. Writing the book is only one part of the work. Staying with it after publication requires its own discipline. You have to keep learning, speaking about the book, making connections, and showing up even when the response is not what you hoped it would be.

Everybody Cannot Go With You

Growth can also change your relationships.

Krista spoke honestly about losing longtime friends as she continued to grow. Her circle became smaller, and that hurt. These were people who had been in her life for decades and had watched her work toward her goals.

Sometimes people take their own fears and project them onto what you are trying to do. Their response may have less to do with your ability and more to do with what your choices force them to confront about themselves.

That is why every goal does not need to be announced while it is still being built. Everybody does not need access to your plans, and everybody is not prepared to support what they cannot yet see.

Krista had to trust that the people who were not meant to continue with her could be released and that the right people would enter her life. It was not painless, but it became part of the process.

As I told Krista during our conversation, becoming more authentic also makes it easier to recognize authenticity—or the absence of it—in the people around you.

Do Not Give Up on Yourself

Before we ended the conversation, I asked Krista to leave listeners with one piece of encouragement.

Her answer was direct: Do not give up on yourself.

Krista believes that when people give up on themselves, they eventually begin giving up on everything else. Her advice is to stay connected to yourself, love yourself, and remember the younger version of you who still deserves your care.

That does not mean pretending that everything is easy. Krista’s story includes homelessness, racism, lost relationships, and experiences she kept private for years. Her message comes from living through those things, not avoiding them.

Her story is not about never facing opposition. It is about refusing to let opposition make the final decision.

Key Takeaways

  • Krista Ford’s lifelong journals became the foundation for her self-help spiritual memoir, Krista’s Promise.

  • Consistency—not immediate attention or validation—is what allows someone to improve and move closer to a goal.

  • Sharing every plan with everybody can leave your goals exposed to other people’s fears and limitations.

  • Growth may change your relationships, and some people may not be able to continue into the next part of your journey.

  • Krista’s central message is that you cannot give up on yourself, even when life changes the people and circumstances around you.

Publishing With Bright Headed Publishing

Krista’s experience shows how personal history can become the foundation for a book, but turning years of journals and lived experience into a published work requires more than placing words into a file.

Bright Headed Publishing provides hands-on publishing support for selected authors with completed or nearly completed manuscripts. We help authors move from manuscript to market through professional book production, interior formatting, cover coordination, ISBN assignment, print and eBook distribution setup, launch support, and long-term positioning.

This is not a quick-upload service or a one-size-fits-all publishing package. We work with a limited number of projects because every book requires individual attention and an infrastructure built around what that author is trying to create.

Finley’s Journey Spotlight

A completed book can become the foundation for something larger.

Finley’s Journey by Jeff Hepner was published under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint as the first book in The Classroom Creatures Chronicles™. The story follows a young trout from a classroom tank toward open water and connects young readers with authentic conservation experiences.

The publishing project extended beyond producing the book. The Finley’s Journey Student Workbook was developed as a companion resource that follows the story chapter by chapter while helping students explore trout life cycles, watersheds, observation, and river stewardship.

Together, the book and workbook show how one story can extend into classrooms, support educators, and create additional ways for young readers to interact with the subject.
