The Author’s Mic™: Maria T. Aponte on Turning Survival Into Purpose
Maria has spent her life surviving things that should have taken her out.
She was the surviving twin after her mother experienced a miscarriage and was given less than a one-percent chance of living. At 16, Maria survived sexual assault. At 18, she was diagnosed with cervical cancer connected to HPV. The cancer returned, and she was told she would not be able to have children.
She later became a mother of three.
Maria went on to survive cancer four times, a near-death experience during surgery, a hysterectomy at 32, divorce, depression, and the pressure of raising three children as a single mother.
Her appearance did not always reveal what she was carrying. She could still smile and appear happy while struggling internally.
This episode of The Author’s Mic™ is about more than what Maria survived. It is about how she stopped allowing those experiences to define her only as a victim and began building work that could help other people recognize the purpose inside their own stories.

Learning Who She Was Again
During one of the most difficult periods of her life, Maria realized that she needed to take her physical and emotional health seriously.
She began exercising, working on her wellness, and spending time on personal development. After years of marriage, motherhood, infertility, health problems, and divorce, she needed to learn who she was outside of everything that had happened to her.
Reading had been important to Maria when she was younger. She remembered staying awake at night with books and writing chapters of her own stories on graph paper before she had access to a computer. She would pass those chapters to her friends and younger sister, who waited to see what she wrote next.
Becoming an author was not a new idea. It was something she had carried since childhood, even when life moved her attention in other directions.
How Against All Odds Began
In 2022, Maria was helping care for her father while he was living with cancer. She described herself as a daddy’s girl, and the experience took an emotional toll on her.
Maria traveled to the Pacific Northwest for a personal retreat with a friend. During a meditative moment, the words “against all odds” came to her. She knew she wanted to create a podcast with that name.
Her father died in October 2022.
The following May, Maria attended a mindset conference where participants were challenged to take one action toward something they had continued to postpone. For Maria, that unfinished idea was the podcast.
She gave herself a deadline of June 1.
She did not know how to produce, edit, or distribute a podcast. She opened an account with a podcast platform and began learning. She created an introduction and closing, recorded her first episode, taught herself how to edit, and launched the show within a few weeks.
The first season included much of Maria’s own story along with conversations with people she knew who had survived difficult experiences. As the podcast grew, she began interviewing people she had not previously known.
Those conversations showed Maria how many people had faced circumstances that could have broken them but had still found ways to rebuild their lives.
Life Happening for You, Not to You
One of the central ideas behind Maria’s work is that life can happen for you rather than only to you.
That does not mean everything happens for a reason. Maria made an important distinction during our conversation: she does not believe every painful experience arrives with a predetermined explanation.
She believes we can look for purpose in what we have survived.
That shift helped Maria stop seeing herself only through the lens of victimhood. Instead of asking why something happened to her, she began asking what she could learn, create, or offer because she had lived through it.
Her podcast became a place where people could tell the truth about what they had experienced and what it took to keep going. Maria understood that listeners might not share the exact same experience as a guest, but they could still recognize the fear, grief, uncertainty, isolation, or determination behind the story.
We do not have to experience identical circumstances to recognize a shared emotion.
Turning Podcast Episodes Into a Book
At a conference for podcasters, Maria heard a speaker say that if you have podcast episodes, you may already have a book.
That statement changed the way she viewed the body of work she had created.
Maria downloaded transcripts from selected episodes and began organizing them into a manuscript. She worked with AI as a sounding board to help review the flow, but the stories and words came from Maria and her guests.
Before using anyone’s story, she asked for permission.
After creating each chapter, Maria returned it to the person whose experience was included. She asked them to review how their story had been presented and confirm that it still felt accurate.
Her book, Against All Odds: The Less Than 1% Chance, combines Maria’s personal journey with the survival stories of people she interviewed through her podcast. The chapters also include lessons readers can carry into their own lives.
This was not simply content repurposing. Maria was handling real people’s experiences. Asking permission and allowing contributors to review their chapters protected the integrity of the work and respected the people who trusted her with their stories.
The finished book also gave those stories another place to live.
Using the Work You Have Already Created
Maria’s publishing journey raised an important question for me as a host: What work are we already sitting on?
Podcasters have interviews. Speakers have presentations. Authors have journals, notes, deleted chapters, research, essays, blog posts, and conversations. None of that automatically becomes a book, but it may contain the beginning of one.
Maria did not wait for someone else to tell her she was qualified to use what she had created. She recognized the value of her work, learned the self-publishing process, and moved forward.
She also did not pretend she knew everything before she started.
That matters because not knowing how to complete every step can become an excuse to never take the first one. Maria opened the podcast account before she understood podcasting. She began organizing the book before she had every publishing question answered. She learned as the work required her to learn.
That willingness to move without having the entire path mapped out is part of why the podcast, book, and larger platform now exist.
Building Beyond the Book
Publishing Against All Odds: The Less Than 1% Chance was not the end of Maria’s work.
She developed the FOR You Framework and created resources based on the lessons connected to the book and her own rebuilding process. These include The FOR You Shift, a free seven-day email course that helps participants move from asking, “Why is this happening to me?” toward examining what they can do with the experience.
Maria is also continuing to build courses and additional support around resilience, healing, identity, and finding purpose after difficult seasons.
Her growth is not limited to releasing another product. She is building an ecosystem around a central body of work. The podcast brings forward real stories. The book preserves and organizes those stories. The courses give people a way to apply the ideas to their own lives.
Each part supports the others without requiring Maria to abandon the original reason she started.
Accepting the Whole Story
Maria and I also talked about the pressure to present only the polished parts of ourselves.
That is exhausting, and it is not reality.
People have good, difficult, beautiful, and imperfect parts. Accepting who you are does not mean refusing to change. It means being honest enough to recognize what needs work without acting as though the less attractive parts of your story do not exist.
Accountability becomes possible when we stop pretending.
Maria’s work does not erase what happened to her. It shows what she chose to build after it happened.
Her advice for anyone beginning a healing process was clear: look for the purpose behind what you have experienced, not necessarily a reason that explains why it happened.
The experience may have shaped you, but it does not have to be the end of your story.
