The Author’s Mic™: Melinda — Building Author Infrastructure

The Author’s Mic™: Melinda — Building Author Infrastructure

Hey everybody, Kelly here. This episode is one of those conversations where you can actually see the difference between writing a book and building something that can carry that book long term.

Melinda came back to the show five years later, and what stood out immediately was the shift. She was already an author back then, but now she’s operating from a completely different place. Same creativity, but now there’s structure behind it.

She started by talking about where she was before. Solo indie author. Traveling. Presenting. Publishing. Growing. But even with all of that, there came a point where growth without structure just wasn’t enough.

That’s when she made the move to build something bigger.

She formed an LLC, but not just to say she had a company. She built out three divisions, each with a specific purpose. At the center of it was a development system — a pipeline where every idea starts, gets tested, gets shaped, and gets evaluated before it ever becomes a finished product.

She broke down how ideas begin as what she calls “rough cuts,” move into development, get structured, and then go through a full process of evaluation. Some ideas move forward. Some don’t. But nothing skips the system.

And that’s the part most indie authors don’t think about.

We write the book.

We publish the book.

Then we jump straight to social media hoping something lands.

But there’s no process behind it. No repeatability.

One thing she said that really stuck:

Talent creates the draft.

Systems create the career.

That shift alone changes how you move.

She also talked about thinking beyond the book. Not every story is meant to stay between covers. Some can move into screen, series, or other formats. But if you want that, you need to be prepared for it.

That means documentation.

That means rights.

That means being able to prove ownership clearly.

It’s not the exciting part of writing, but it’s the part that protects everything you create.

Another thing that came through clearly is that building this kind of infrastructure takes time. She stepped back. Slowed down. Stopped pushing out books at the same pace. Focused on building systems.

Now, everything flows differently.

The work moves through structure instead of chaos.

Key Takeaways

• Writing a book is not the same as building a writing career

• Systems create consistency and remove guesswork

• Every idea should move through a process before becoming a product

• Not every story is limited to a book format

• Rights and documentation matter if your work grows beyond publishing

• Infrastructure takes time, but it supports everything long term
