The Author’s Mic™: Nicole Hope Sylvester on Why Calm Is Power

Calm is easy to mistake for stillness or passivity. But when stress is controlling your reactions, your decisions, and the way you move through the world, being able to create calm gives you access to something much more useful: choice.
In this episode of The Author’s Mic™, I’m joined by author and speaker Nicole Hope Sylvester to talk about her book, Calm Is Power. Our conversation explores the relationship between the body, the nervous system, beliefs, mindset, and behavior—and why changing what happens inside us can affect how we respond to everything happening around us.

What Does It Mean to Say Calm Is Power?
Nicole’s interest in this work grew from her own experience with anxiety and depression. She sought support from therapists, counselors, medical professionals, a nutritionist, an acupuncturist, and others. Each person brought a different area of expertise, but she noticed that the progress connected to that support often slowed when the appointment or treatment ended.
Seeing five or six different specialists every month for the rest of her life did not feel sustainable. Nicole began looking for a way to understand how those different pieces worked together.
That exploration became the foundation for Calm Is Power. The book brings together four areas: biology, beliefs and emotions, mindset, and behavior. Nicole describes them as parts of our human operating system.
Most of us are not taught how that system works. We are often trained to believe that we must control the external world before we can feel better internally. Nicole’s work starts from the other direction. If we understand what is happening inside the body—and why we react the way we do—we have a better chance of choosing what happens next.
The Body Often Reacts Before We Think
When we respond sharply, shut down, overthink, avoid something, or repeat a familiar pattern, our bodies may already have interpreted the situation before our conscious thoughts catch up.
Nicole explained that chronic stress can place the body in a constant state of looking for danger. When that happens, the brain concentrates on the next threat or problem. It becomes much harder to notice what is going well, think creatively, or respond with intention.
She compares the nervous system to the foundation of a house. If the foundation is shaking like an earthquake, everything above it is working simply to stay upright. Trying to rearrange the house while the foundation is still moving does not solve the underlying problem.
When the foundation becomes steadier, we gain more room to decide what we actually want to change.
That is where calm becomes power. Calm does not mean nothing difficult is happening. It means stress is no longer making every decision for us.
We Need a Relationship With Our Bodies
Nicole talks about the importance of body literacy—understanding the physical signals and information our bodies give us throughout the day.
The body is not just something carrying us from one responsibility to the next. It allows us to experience fear, pleasure, intuition, anger, beauty, connection, and everything else that makes up a life.
But many of us treat the body like a rental car. We fill it with gas occasionally, follow a few instructions because somebody told us to, and otherwise ignore it until something stops working.
That part of the conversation hit home for me. I am a master gardener and, as someone once pointed out, a barefoot gardener. I never gave that label much thought because putting my feet in the dirt simply felt natural to me. I feel better outside. Gardening and self-care are not occasional boxes I check. They are part of my daily life.
Nicole explained that moving farther away from outdoor living and full-body experiences means we must become more intentional about giving our bodies what they need. Nature, movement, breathing, stretching, and sensory experiences can all help the body recognize that it is safe.
Calm Gives Us Access to More of Ourselves
When the body is under chronic stress, it can become difficult to access creativity, innovation, appreciation, and clear thinking. The body is too busy preparing for the next problem.
That has practical consequences beyond physical health.
Nicole pointed out that the calmest person in a negotiation often has more power because that person can think creatively while someone operating from stress may be thinking defensively. The same distinction can affect communication, leadership, work, and relationships.
For authors and publishing professionals, this matters. We make decisions about money, contracts, collaborations, criticism, deadlines, visibility, and what opportunities deserve our time. If every decision comes from pressure or fear, we may react before we have gathered enough information to choose well.
Calm creates enough space to respond instead of simply react.
One Simple Way to Return to Calm
Before Nicole left, I asked her for one quick practice someone could use during a stressful moment—even while sitting in traffic.
Her suggestion was simple: place one hand over your heart, breathe into that space, and begin thinking about the things for which you are grateful.
The body responds to gratitude. That physical connection, paired with breathing and intentional thought, can help bring us out of automatic reaction and back into the present moment.
It does not require special equipment, a scheduled appointment, or a perfect environment. It is one small way to remind the body that the immediate moment is safe.

Finley’s Journey Spotlight
A book can become more than something a reader finishes and places back on a shelf.
Finley’s Journey by Jeff Hepner is published under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint and is part of The Classroom Creatures Chronicles™. Inspired by authentic conservation experiences, the book follows a young trout from a classroom tank toward open water while introducing young readers to trout life cycles, watersheds, and river stewardship.
The project also includes the Finley’s Journey Student Workbook, a companion resource that extends the story into classroom and at-home learning. Its activities encourage students to observe, reflect, think like scientists, and consider their own relationship with the natural world.
The book and workbook show what resource development can add to a publishing project. The goal was not simply to release a title. It was to create material that could move from the page into classrooms, families, conservation programs, and community conversations.
