The Author’s Mic™: The Scam, The Retreat, and The Rebuild

The Author’s Mic™: The Scam, The Retreat, and The Rebuild

This vault episode of The Author’s Mic™ was personal.

Not polished.
Not pretty.
Just honest.

In this episode, I talked about getting scammed early in my publishing journey and how that experience almost made me walk away from writing completely.

At the time, I was excited. I thought somebody believed in my work. I thought I was finally moving forward.

Instead, I lost money, handed over rights I should have never handed over, and got ghosted.

No communication.
No support.
No book.
Nothing.

And honestly? I was embarrassed.

I didn’t tell people what happened because I felt ashamed that I had fallen for it in the first place. So instead of fighting loudly, I retreated quietly.

I stopped writing.
I disappeared.
I convinced myself maybe I just wasn’t built for this industry.

But the desire to become an author never really left me.

Eventually, I decided to fight to get my rights back to You Sound White. It took time. A lot of time. I contacted attorneys, filed complaints, pushed through dead ends, and slowly worked my way through the process.

And eventually, I got my book back.

That experience changed how I viewed publishing forever.

I started learning everything I could about self-publishing, traditional publishing, hybrid publishing, editing, distribution, and ownership. I rebuilt Bright Headed Publishing. I launched a podcast. I started interviewing authors and helping them promote their work.

Then I burned out.

And I stopped again.

That part matters too because a lot of people think rebuilding happens in one straight line. It doesn’t.

But eventually another idea came: Wait for It.

This time, I decided I was going to do things differently. I wrote the book, created the audiobook, rebranded Bright Headed Publishing, relaunched You Sound White, started The Author’s Mic™, and created my free guide for indie authors because I never wanted somebody else to walk blindly into the same traps I did.

This episode is really about resilience.
Not the motivational-poster version.
The real version.

The version where you stop.
Restart.
Doubt yourself.
Then try again anyway.
