The Author’s Mic™: What Are You Actually Paying for in Publishing Services?

Hand holding pink tag over document with magnifying glass and pen.

When somebody says, “I can publish your book,” what happens after you hand them your manuscript?

That’s the question I wanted to answer in this episode of The Author’s Mic™. Bright Headed Publishing offers publishing services, and being on this side of the process has made me even more aware of what authors need to understand before paying anyone to publish their work.

Publishing Starts With a Conversation

When I started Bright Headed Publishing, I was originally set up to publish my own work. But yes, we also publish other authors.

That doesn’t mean we accept every manuscript. For me, the process begins with a conversation.

I want to know about the author, the book, the vision, and where the manuscript stands. We’re looking at completed or nearly completed manuscripts, and we need to determine whether working together makes sense.

Not every publishing company approaches that conversation the same way. But I think authors should understand whether a company is a fit before committing to its services.

There are traditional publishers, hybrid publishers, and self-publishing services, along with companies offering different combinations. This conversation isn’t about explaining every model. It’s about understanding the specific work someone wants you to purchase.

What Happens After You Hand Over the Manuscript?

At Bright Headed Publishing, we manage the process of moving the manuscript toward publication.

That includes coordinating interior formatting, preparing files, and providing an ISBN under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint. We set up print distribution through Amazon KDP and IngramSpark, and ebook distribution through Draft2Digital.

We also work through the proofing and production process. That matters because things do go wrong.

Files get rejected. A proof arrives and something doesn’t look right. Something doesn’t print the way it should. Publishing has moving pieces, and part of the service is managing those pieces when they need attention.

We also help with pricing and distribution decisions. Authors need to understand where their books will be available and how those choices fit the project.

What Happens After the Book Is Published?

I don’t think the work should end with, “Congratulations, your book is live.”

Because then what?

That’s where a lot of authors get stuck. They have a published book, but they don’t know how to present it or where to begin introducing it.

As part of our publishing services, we provide a professional author media kit. It contains information about the author, the book, and where people can find it.

That kit belongs to the author. You can use it when approaching:

  • Podcasts.

  • Bookstores.

  • Book clubs.

  • Media outlets.

  • Events and other relevant opportunities.

We also include the TrustBridge™ Spotlight Kit. TrustBridge™ is my curated introduction service, designed to connect authors with opportunities that align with their books and goals.

The point is to help an author move forward with materials and introductions that support the work after publication.

Helping Authors Get Started With Their Platforms

Some authors come to publishing without a social media presence for their books. They may not know where to start.

When needed, we can help establish those platforms and assist with the first posts. That could mean Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, or Threads, depending on what the author wants to build.

We don’t maintain those accounts for you. We help you get started.

I’m not promising that you’ll go viral or sell a particular number of books. I’m talking about building a foundation so you aren’t left holding a published book with no idea what to do next.

Our ecosystem also creates opportunities to introduce authors and their work. That includes The Author’s Mic™, consideration by the Indie Reader Society™, and visibility opportunities connected to The Author’s Mic™ Magazine.

You do not have to publish with Bright Headed Publishing to be a guest on The Author’s Mic™. The wider purpose of the platform is to support indie authors and their work.

What We Don’t Provide Directly

I want to be clear about the boundaries of our services.

We do not directly provide:

  • Editing.

  • Proofreading.

  • Illustration.

  • Cover design.

If you need those professionals, we can help identify them, provide referrals, and coordinate with outside providers. Those services and costs are separate.

Reviewing a production proof is part of managing the publishing process. It doesn’t replace professional editing or proofreading.

Knowing what isn’t included is just as important as knowing what is.

The Questions I Want Authors to Ask

Don’t stop at, “How much does it cost?”

Ask what the company is actually doing for you.

  • What is included in the price?

  • What isn’t included?

  • Who manages the publishing process?

  • Who handles the ISBN?

  • Who handles print and ebook distribution?

  • What happens when there’s a production problem?

  • What support is available after publication?

  • Do I receive marketing materials or platform support?

  • Who owns the copyright?

  • Does the company take royalties?

  • What do I walk away with when the work is finished?

That’s how you compare services. You need to understand the work and the terms.

Your Copyright and Your Royalties

With Bright Headed Publishing, authors retain their copyright. We do not take ownership of their work.

Our publishing-services model also does not take a percentage of author royalties. Standard printing, retailer, and distributor fees still apply, but Bright Headed Publishing does not add a royalty share for itself.

You wrote the book. I’m providing a service, managing the process, and helping get that book into the marketplace.

Whether you work with me or another company, understand what you own, what you’re purchasing, and what happens after publication. Then decide whether the investment makes sense for you.

Key Takeaways

  • Publishing services should clearly explain what happens after you submit your manuscript.

  • Production support includes managing files, proofs, distribution setup, and problems that arise.

  • Media kits, introductions, and initial platform support can help authors prepare for life after publication.

  • Editing, proofreading, illustration, and cover design are separate from Bright Headed Publishing’s direct services.

  • Authors should understand copyright, royalties, exclusions, and final deliverables before committing.

Publishing With Bright Headed Publishing

Bright Headed Publishing works with selected authors to produce professional books and prepare the infrastructure around them. That includes hands-on production management, formatting coordination, ISBN assignment, distribution setup, and support beyond the upload.

If you have a completed or nearly completed manuscript, let’s discuss what your project needs and whether we’re a fit. The conversation comes before any commitment.

Finley’s Journey Spotlight

Finley’s Journey by Jeff Hepner is a publishing project from the Bright Headed Publishing imprint and part of The Classroom Creatures Chronicles™.

The story follows a young trout from a classroom tank toward the wild, connecting the book with authentic conservation experiences. The companion Finley’s Journey Student Workbook extends that work through trout life cycles, watersheds, observation activities, and stewardship.

It’s an example of how publishing can involve both the finished book and resources that help it reach classrooms and communities.
