The Author’s Mic™: Why I Keep Showing Up
The other day, I had to ask myself: Kelly, why are you doing all this?
I have The Author’s Mic™, BTA Fridays™, a book club, publishing services, TrustBridge™, digital products, and now a magazine in development. Building all of that takes time. Sometimes I’m sitting in front of the camera wondering whether anybody is listening.
This episode is about the answer I keep coming back to—and the experiences behind the Bright Headed Publishing ecosystem.

Why Am I Building All of This?
I truly enjoy helping people. That was the answer when I sat down and thought about it.
I would love to make a living doing this work. But when I look at why I started each part of the business, it came from something I experienced and wanted to make better for another author.
I’m building things I wish had existed when I needed them.
There are people who have been doing this longer than I have. They have bigger platforms, larger audiences, and more experience. I can recognize that without deciding I have nothing to contribute.
I see something missing, and my brain goes straight to: well, I guess I’ll build it.
Every Part Started With an Experience
Bright Headed Publishing started after I was scammed during my own publishing journey. I got my book back and had to figure out how to move forward.
The Author’s Mic™ grew from wanting to promote my work and realizing I could create a platform where other authors could share theirs, too.
Then I started pitching book clubs. That experience led me to create the Indie Reader Society™, a community that reads and supports independent authors.
TrustBridge™ came from the outreach I had already been doing to podcasts, bookstores, and book clubs. I knew how much work those introductions required. I had been building relationships and learning how to approach opportunities, and I saw a service I could provide to other authors.
It is paid work because the research, preparation, outreach, and follow-up take time. Authors can look at the service and decide whether it fits their needs.
Then came the magazine.
I went through a submission process that ended with a request for $599. After all of that, I thought: I’m going to build a magazine where editorial participation doesn’t depend on an author paying for it.
The Author’s Mic™ Magazine will never charge authors for editorial acceptance, cover placement, or recognition. That is part of why I’m building it.
This Space Will Try You
I’ve developed tougher skin doing this work because putting yourself out there can be rough.
Some people won’t respond. Some won’t support what you’re building. Some ideas won’t work. Sometimes you’ll hear no, and sometimes you won’t hear anything.
You can put something out there and get crickets.
Then you have to decide what you’re going to do with that.
I’ve learned that silence cannot make every decision for me. Neither can rejection. I still have to look at the work, learn from what happens, and decide what needs to change.
Sometimes I need to adjust. Sometimes I need to start over. I don’t have every answer, and I’m learning while I build.
My Guests Teach Me, Too
Every author who has come on The Author’s Mic™ has left me with something.
It might be a different perspective, an idea, or a piece of their experience that makes me think differently about my own journey.
I carry those things with me. Then I try to share what I’ve learned.
If somebody teaches me something useful, I want another author to benefit from it. If I make a mistake, I want to talk about it so someone else might avoid it.
That could mean helping an author understand an ISBN, recognize a scam, ask a better question, or think differently about reaching readers.
I want this platform to be a resource people can actually use.
Is Anybody Listening?
I ask myself that question.
When you’re recording, creating content, and building mostly by yourself, you don’t always know what happens after somebody watches.
Then someone sends a message or an email and tells me something helped them.
Maybe they avoided a mistake. Maybe they understood something that had been confusing. Maybe they found an idea they could use.
That means a lot to me.
I don’t need to pretend those messages make every part of building a business easy. They do remind me why the work matters to the people receiving it.
I Have to Manage the Conversation in My Own Head
Fear can take over quickly if I let it.
Fear of rejection. A bad review. Nobody showing up. Nobody watching. Wasting time. Building something that doesn’t work.
Then comparison joins the conversation. Somebody has more followers. Somebody has a bigger audience. Somebody knows more.
Some of that may be true. It still doesn’t tell me what I should do with the work in front of me.
I know my intentions. I believe independent authors deserve spaces that support them, and I believe we can build better ways to connect authors with readers.
I can keep learning without waiting for someone else to believe in the business first.
Why I’ll Keep Showing Up
I haven’t figured everything out. I’m not the expert on every part of publishing, and I don’t believe every day is going to feel easy.
But I know why I’m here.
I want authors to find useful information, real relationships, and opportunities that fit their work. I want us to be able to learn from one another and pass that knowledge along.
So I’ll keep building, one piece at a time.
If you’ve watched an episode, joined me as a guest, sent a message, or told me something here helped you, thank you. You’ve helped me understand what this platform is doing beyond what I can see from my side of the camera.
Key Takeaways
Bright Headed Publishing’s platforms and services grew from specific problems I encountered as an indie author.
TrustBridge™ developed from the relationships and outreach experience I built while pursuing literary opportunities.
The Author’s Mic™ is a place where I learn from guests and share that knowledge with other authors.
Rejection, silence, and comparison are part of my experience building the business.
Messages from people who have used the information help me see the platform’s value beyond audience size.
Publishing With Bright Headed Publishing
Helping authors also means doing the production work that gets a manuscript ready for readers.
Bright Headed Publishing provides hands-on publishing support for selected authors. Depending on the project, that may include interior formatting, print and EPUB preparation, ISBN assignment under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint, and KDP and IngramSpark distribution setup.
We also consider what the book needs around it, including author materials, companion resources, and positioning beyond publication day. The work is shaped around the project and the author’s goals.
If you have a completed or nearly completed manuscript and are serious about publishing, contact Bright Headed Publishing to discuss whether we’re a fit:

Finley’s Journey Spotlight
Finley’s Journey by Jeff Hepner is one example of what this publishing work looks like.
Published under the Bright Headed Publishing imprint, the book is part of The Classroom Creatures Chronicles™. Finley is a trout whose story begins in a classroom tank and continues toward open water.
The project connects storytelling with authentic conservation experiences. Its companion, the Finley’s Journey Student Workbook, extends the story into activities about trout life cycles, watersheds, and stewardship.
The book and educational resources show how a publishing project can develop beyond the finished reading experience and into material educators and families can use.
