The Real Problem

A lot of indie authors finish their book… and something still feels off.

The story is there.

The idea is there.

The effort is definitely there.

But it doesn’t land.

It doesn’t pull readers in.

It doesn’t stick.

And the truth is—most of the time, it’s not a writing issue.

It’s a depth issue.

Why This Happens

Because most indie authors are building stories from imagination only.

Not from anything grounded.

In this episode of The Author’s Mic™, James Fouché talks about writing fiction using a “thread of truth”—pulling from real-life experiences, environments, and systems, then building a story on top of that.

That’s the difference.

When a story is only imagined, it can feel disconnected.

When it’s rooted in something real, it carries weight.

What Most Authors Get Wrong

They think:

“I just need a good story idea.”

But a good idea without grounding turns into:

surface-level characters

unrealistic decisions

forced plot twists

forgettable storytelling

A lot of authors also stop at basic editing.

They fix grammar.

They fix typos.

But they don’t fix the story itself.

And that’s where books fall apart.

The Step-by-Step Solution

If your book feels flat—or you’re about to start writing—this is what you do:

Step 1 — Find your real-world anchor

Ask yourself:

What is this story actually rooted in?

Not the theme. Not the message.

The real thing.

Examples:

a community

a lived experience

a system (healthcare, education, publishing)

a real issue (identity, grief, crime, burnout)

If you can’t answer this clearly, stop and figure it out first.

Step 2 — Go beyond surface research

Don’t rely on one article or what you “think” you know.

Do this instead:

read firsthand accounts

watch interviews or documentaries

pull from your own lived experience

talk to people if you can

You’re not just collecting facts.

You’re understanding how it feels.

Step 3 — Build your character from that truth

Instead of creating a character first, ask:

What does this environment do to a person?

Then build:

their mindset

their reactions

their decisions

Now your character has weight and purpose.

Step 4 — Let the story follow cause and effect

Stop forcing plot.

Instead ask:

“If this situation is real, what would actually happen next?”

That’s where tension comes from.

Not drama for the sake of it—

but consequences.

Step 5 — Strengthen it with real editing (not just grammar)

This is where most authors fall short.

You need:

narrative flow

character arc development

pacing fixes

structure refinement

This is creative editing.

This is what turns a “written book” into a readable one.

What To Do Next

Don’t overthink this. Do this today:

Take your current book (or idea)

Write down the real-world anchor behind it

If you can’t clearly define it → pause writing

Spend the next 48 hours researching or reflecting on that anchor

Rewrite ONE scene using what you now understand

Not the whole book.

Just one scene.

You’ll immediately feel the difference.
