Hey everybody, Kelly here. We’re wrapping up the month of April, and this episode pulls everything together. This entire month has been about what it really means to step into the indie author space, and before moving forward, this was a moment to pause and look back at the questions that matter.
Watch the full episode:
We started with the decision. Not just writing the book, but making the choice to publish it. To share it. To let people read it and respond to it. That’s a different level of intention. And the question behind that is simple but important: why are you doing this?
Is it legacy?
Is it healing?
Is it storytelling?
Is it business?
Is it impact?
If you don’t know why, the journey can start to feel off.
Then we moved into defining your lane. Being an indie author does not mean one thing. Some people are writers. Some are building businesses. Some are teaching, speaking, consulting, or publishing others. Some, like me, realize they’re building an entire ecosystem.
The key is knowing what lane you’re actually in. Because if you don’t define it, you’ll start chasing things that were never meant for you.
Then came the reality.
The indie author journey asks a lot. Your time. Your money. Your energy. Your visibility. It comes with burnout, disappointment, and things that don’t work out the way you expected. And the truth is, not every opportunity is your opportunity. Not every room is your room.
You have to be honest about what this path is going to cost you.
And then we talked about commitment.
This is the one that doesn’t get enough attention. Writing the book is one thing. Publishing it is another. Sharing it is another. But the real question is how long are you willing to stay with the work?
How long are you willing to talk about it?
How long are you willing to build around it?
What kind of commitment are you actually making?
Is this one book?
A hobby?
A long-term body of work?
A business?
A career?
If you don’t define that, you’ll end up expecting results that don’t match the level of commitment you’re giving.
So now the question becomes: what do you do with all of this?
Because hearing it isn’t enough.
It’s easy to listen, agree, and keep moving. But the real work is stopping long enough to process it.
That’s the pause.
That’s the moment where you sit down and actually define what this journey looks like for you.
And it starts with four questions:
Why am I doing this?
What lane am I building in?
What is the reality of this path for me?
What kind of commitment am I actually willing to make?
If you don’t take the time to answer those, you’ll start moving in directions that don’t fit your life, your goals, or your capacity.
Clarity matters.
You can’t build anything solid on confusion. You build from clarity. And clarity comes from being honest with yourself.
This episode wasn’t about adding more. It was about slowing down long enough to understand what you’re actually building before you try to build it.
