Why Indie Authors Buy Followers — And Why It Doesn’t Work | BTA - Breaking the Algorithm™

In this episode of BTA - Breaking the Algorithm™, Kelly Morgan explores why indie authors are tempted to buy followers, what it really costs, and smarter ways to build authentic visibility.

Why Indie Authors Buy Followers — And Why It Doesn’t Work

Welcome to BTA - Breaking the Algorithm™, where we cut through the noise and build something better together.

If you’re like me, you’ve shown up, posted, done everything the experts say you should — and still the numbers don’t move. Then the DMs start rolling in:

“We can grow your followers to 10,000 in a week.”

“Guaranteed views.”

“Just one fee and your engagement will explode.”

I’ve seen these offers on Instagram, TikTok, YouTube — everywhere. And I’ll be honest: it’s tempting. When you’re building something as an indie author, it’s hard not to want the shortcut.

Why Buying Followers Feels Tempting

The numbers look good. A bigger following gives the illusion of success.

Confidence boost. Opening your profile and seeing five digits feels validating.

Social proof. We think higher numbers will make us look credible.

But here’s the truth: those numbers don’t translate into sales, readers, or real support.

The Problem With Paying for Exposure

Bots don’t buy books. Fake followers don’t read, review, or recommend your work.

Algorithms know. Platforms can detect fake engagement and limit your reach.

It costs you twice. You pay upfront, then pay again later when your “engagement” doesn’t convert.

The hard truth? Buying followers is paying for validation — not opportunity.

What Works Instead

Build connection. Real readers > fake numbers. Focus on conversations, not counts.

Leverage community. Cross-promote with other indie authors, especially Authors of Color.

Consistency. Show up. Keep posting, even when the numbers move slow.

Diversify. Don’t depend on one platform — podcasts, blogs, and book clubs all build visibility.

Takeaway

Shortcuts don’t build careers. Buying followers might make the numbers look pretty, but it won’t sell books or create lasting connection.

Don’t buy validation. Build community.
