When you grow up hearing which streets to avoid, crime doesn’t feel like fiction. For crime thriller author Kathy D. Bailey, it became the heartbeat of her debut novel, Nemesis—a psychological thriller rooted in real fear, real loss, and real Memphis streets.
In this episode of The Author’s Mic™, we talk about gunshots on the first night in a new house, a mama’s heart that wouldn’t settle, and how all of that became a book.

WRITING THROUGH FEAR IN MEMPHIS
Kathy grew up in North Mississippi, close enough to Memphis to know which neighborhoods you didn’t drive through after dark.
After an unexpected divorce, both of her grown daughters moved into the very city she’d warned them about for years.
She followed them, bought a house around the corner from her oldest daughter, renovated it, moved in…and on the very first night, she heard gunshots.
That sound lit up every fear she’d carried as a mother. Instead of stuffing it down, she opened a Word document.
Those fears, news headlines, and late-night worries poured onto the page and became Nemesis, a psychological crime thriller that asks hard questions:
HUMAN BEHAVIOR, TRAUMA, AND THE MAKING OF A CRIMINAL
Kathy has always been fascinated by human behavior—especially when it comes to:
In Nemesis, she doesn’t glamorize crime. Instead, she steps into the messy reality of:
The novel explores how a person can grow up believing that:
is just part of life.
It’s fiction—but it’s built on very real pain.
RACISM, MEMPHIS, AND WANTING TO BE PART OF THE SOLUTION
Kathy and I also talked about racism in Memphis.
She shared how:
She doesn’t claim to have all the answers. What she does want is to be part of the solution:
HONORING REAL VICTIMS, NOT JUST TELLING A “CRIME STORY”
One of the most powerful parts of our conversation was hearing how real Memphis tragedies shaped Nemesis.
Kathy shared stories like:
These are not plot twists. These are real people whose lives were cut short.
Kathy wrote Nemesis in part to say:
Their lives mattered.
It should have never happened.
We cannot just look away.
WHAT SHE’S WRITING NEXT
Kathy isn’t done telling stories. She has three more books coming, including:
KATHY’S ADVICE TO NEW AUTHORS
If you’ve ever wondered how to start your book, Kathy keeps it simple:
“Just do it. Open up Microsoft Word and just start.
Let those ideas flow to the page and worry about organizing it later.
Just get it out.”
You don’t need a perfect outline. You don’t need all the answers. You just need to start.
