It’s Kelly , indie author, publisher, and host of The Author’s Mic™ and BTA Fridays™ – Breaking the Algorithm™.
Well, we’ve reached that point in the year again. The calendar is about to flip from February to March, and if you’re an author of color, you know exactly what that feels like. It’s like the morning after a massive party where you were the guest of honor, but now the lights are up, the music has stopped, and everyone is suddenly very busy looking for the St. Patrick’s Day decorations.
In the publishing world, February often feels like a whirlwind of "Spotlight" features, diversity panels, and social media shout-outs. It’s the one month where the algorithm seems to finally remember we exist. But here’s the cold, hard truth: If your marketing strategy begins and ends with Black History Month, you’re not building a career, you’re participating in a trend. And as we all know, trends have an expiration date.
Today on BTA Fridays™, we’re talking about how to take that February energy and turn it into a sustainable, year-round engine for your author brand. We’re moving beyond the spike and using history not as a crutch, but as the powerful starting point it was always meant to be.

Let’s get real for a second. That spike in your analytics during February? It’s a mirage if it doesn’t lead to long-term engagement.
Many indie authors of color get caught in the trap of "seasonal visibility." We see the likes go up, the follows increase, and maybe a few extra books fly off the digital shelves because we were included in a "Top 10 Black Authors to Read Right Now" list. Don't get me wrong, visibility is great. We need it. But visibility without a value-driven funnel is just vanity.
The algorithm loves a theme. It loves a hashtag like #BlackHistoryMonth because it’s easy to categorize. But you are more than a category. When the clock strikes midnight on February 28th, the "diversity checkbox" for many major platforms gets checked off, and the spotlight moves on. If you haven't built a bridge from that temporary spotlight to your own platform, you’re going to see those numbers plummet in March.
Breaking the Algorithm means refusing to let a calendar month dictate your relevance. It means moving from being a "seasonal feature" to being an "essential voice."
Black History Month is a celebration of resilience, innovation, and the stories that paved the way for us to be here. As authors, this history is our foundation. But a foundation is meant to be built upon, not lived in exclusively.
When I talk about using history as a starting point, I’m talking about contextual marketing.
Your book doesn't just exist in a vacuum. It exists because of the history that preceded it. Whether you write contemporary romance, sci-fi, or deep-dive non-fiction, your perspective is shaped by that history. Use February to introduce people to your why, but use the rest of the year to show them your worth.
Sustainable marketing for authors of color requires us to own our narrative 365 days a year. We should be using the momentum of February to:
If you want to dive deeper into how we curate these connections, check out our Author’s Corner. It’s about building a community that values your work regardless of the month.
So, how do we actually do this? How do we break the cycle of the "March Slump"? It starts with a sustainability audit. I want you to look at your marketing efforts over the last 28 days and ask yourself some tough questions.
1. Audit Your Wins
Who engaged with you this month? Was it just other authors, or was it actual readers? If it was readers, where did they come from? Pinpointing the source of your February traffic allows you to double down on those channels in March.
2. Diversify Your "Why"
In February, your "why" might have been tied to representation and honoring the past. In March, your "why" needs to shift toward the immediate value your book provides. Is it an escape? Is it education? Is it a new perspective on a common problem?
3. Build Your Own Table
Stop waiting for the big retailers or the "mainstream" bookstagrammers to invite you to the party. One of the core missions of Bright Headed Publishing is helping authors create their own platforms. Through TrustBridge™ Author Services, we focus on curated connections. We help you find the book clubs, the independent bookstores, and the community leaders who care about your voice all year long.
Don't let the end of the month stall your progress. Here is your "Breaking the Algorithm" plan for the next quarter:
The reality is that the publishing industry has a long history of "tokenism." It’s easy to promote a Black author when it’s trending. It’s much harder for the industry to do the work of sustained, equitable support.
That’s why you have to be the CEO of your brand. You cannot leave your career in the hands of an algorithm that is programmed to follow the path of least resistance. Sustainable marketing is an act of resistance. It’s saying, "I am here, my stories matter, and I am not going anywhere just because the calendar changed."
We are building something bigger than a single month of sales. We are building a legacy. When you look at the products and services we offer at Bright Headed Publishing, the goal is always the same: giving you the tools to own your narrative and your platform.
I don't want you to feel discouraged when the "BHM" tags start to fade. I want you to feel empowered. You’ve just spent a month proving there is an audience for your voice. Now, it’s time to serve that audience with everything you’ve got.
Don’t let the algorithm break you; you break the algorithm.
If you’re feeling stuck on how to make this transition, or if you’re ready to take your marketing to a professional level that lasts all year, let’s talk. You can contact us anytime to see how we can support your journey.
