From Scammed to Self-Published: Why I Built Bright Headed Publishing
“I was too ashamed and embarrassed to admit I’d been scammed.”
When I first decided to publish my book, I was filled with excitement and hope. Like many new authors, I dreamed of seeing my words in readers' hands and my story reaching the world. So when a publisher approached me with promises of success—full distribution, marketing support, and royalty earnings—I thought I had found the perfect fit.
But the dream quickly unraveled into a nightmare.
The so-called publisher took my money. Not only that, but they also took the proceeds from the sales I did manage to make. I was devastated—financially and emotionally. It wasn’t just about the lost money; it was about the betrayal of trust, the gut-wrenching feeling that my work had been exploited.
And for a long time, I didn’t talk about it.
I was ashamed and embarrassed.
I didn’t want anyone to know that I had been scammed. I felt like I had failed—not just as an author, but as someone who was supposed to protect their own work. The shame kept me quiet, but the frustration kept building.
For a moment, I thought about giving up.
But here’s the thing about writers: we don’t quit that easily.
I dug in. I started researching everything about the publishing industry—self-publishing, royalties, marketing, distribution channels—every bit of it. I realized that there are so many authors like me, eager to get their stories out but vulnerable to scams and predatory companies that prey on that very dream.
That’s when Bright Headed Publishing, LLC was born.
I wanted to create a safe, transparent space where writers—especially Black authors and underrepresented voices—could thrive without fear of being taken advantage of. A place where creativity isn’t compromised by contracts filled with fine print or dishonest practices.
1️⃣ Research, Research, Research:
Before signing anything, look up the publisher, check reviews, join author forums, and ask other writers about their experiences.
2️⃣ Know Your Rights:
Your book is YOUR intellectual property. Make sure you understand who owns what and how royalties are handled.
3️⃣ Beware of High Upfront Fees:
Reputable publishers usually make money when your book sells—not from large upfront payments.
4️⃣ Consider Self-Publishing:
It’s a lot of work, but you maintain complete control over your book, your royalties, and your brand.
5️⃣ Find Your Author Community:
One of the biggest shields against scams is being surrounded by people who’ve been there. Join groups, attend workshops, and don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Bright Headed Publishing isn’t just a business—it’s my promise to authors.
We uplift Black voices, support underrepresented writers, and provide guidance to authors who want to navigate the world of publishing with clarity and confidence.
I know the shame that comes with being scammed. I know the embarrassment of feeling like you should’ve known better. But here’s the truth—it’s not your fault. Scammers prey on dreams, and as writers, our dreams are powerful.
If you’re a writer who’s been scammed, is struggling to get started, or just needs someone in your corner—you are not alone.
