How Indie Authors Can Use Threads to Break the Algorithm | BTA Fridays – Breaking the Algorithm™

What if there was a social platform where you didn’t have to dance, lip-sync, or chase trends to meet readers?

In this episode of BTA Fridays – Breaking the Algorithm™, I talk about Threads, Instagram’s text-first companion app, and why it might be a low-pressure place for indie authors to show up, test ideas, and send people to platforms you own.

WHAT IS THREADS, REALLY?

Threads launched in 2023 as Instagram’s text-based app.

Here’s what you can do on it:

  • Log in with your existing Instagram account.
  • Post up to 500 characters of text.
  • Add links, photos, and videos up to 5 minutes.
  • Post from your phone or from your browser.
  • Schedule posts up to 75 days out.
  • Use DMs to talk to people privately.

It feels lighter than Instagram—less performance, more conversation.

WHY THREADS CAUGHT MY ATTENTION AS AN INDIE AUTHOR

To be honest, when Threads launched, I rolled my eyes.

Another platform? No, thank you.

But when I finally explored it, I started noticing things that felt different:

  • A very active bookish community—authors, reviewers, librarians, and readers.
  • Daily chats and conversation threads, not just curated photos.
  • People asking real questions about writing, burnout, marketing, and publishing.
  • Calls for anthologies, beta readers, and collaborations.

It felt less like a stage and more like a group chat.

As an indie author and indie publisher, that matters.

HOW I’M USING THREADS TO “BREAK THE ALGORITHM”

On BTA Fridays – Breaking the Algorithm™, my whole goal is to find ways to build real connections instead of chasing vanity metrics.

Here’s how I’m using Threads to do that:

  • Low-stakes testing – I share lines, thoughts, questions, and see what resonates without needing a full video.
  • Inviting guests – I’ve reached out to authors and creatives I found on Threads to invite them onto The Author’s Mic™.
  • Answering questions with value – When I see someone stuck on something I’ve already built a resource for, I’ll reply and point them to:
    my free guide
    my website
a relevant episode of The Author’s Mic™ or BTA Fridays.
  • Sending people to platforms I own – Threads becomes a front door that leads to:
    https://brightheadedpublishing.com
    my Substack
    my books and resources

That’s how you start to “break the algorithm”—not by ignoring it, but by using it to funnel people to spaces you control.

SHOULD YOU, AS AN INDIE AUTHOR, ADD THREADS TO YOUR PLATE?

I’m never going to tell you to be everywhere.

You might already be active on:

  • YouTube
  • TikTok
  • Instagram
  • Facebook

and that might be enough for now.

In the episode, I suggest asking yourself two simple questions:

QUESTION 1: DO YOU WANT A LOW-STAKES PLACE TO TEST IDEAS?

Threads can be a place to:

  • share a line from your book
  • test a hook or title
  • ask your readers what they actually want
  • talk about your writing process without perfect lighting and edits

QUESTION 2: CAN YOU CONSISTENTLY POINT PEOPLE BACK TO SPACES YOU OWN?

Threads works best when it’s a bridge, not the final destination.

You’ll get more value from it if you use it to point people to:

  • your website
  • your landing page
  • your Substack
  • your book sales pages

If you can answer “yes” to both questions, Threads might be worth a 30-day experiment.

WHAT TO POST IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START

If Threads feels new and awkward, start simple.

For your first few posts:

  • Introduce yourself.
  • Say you’re new to Threads.
  • Share what you write and who your books are for.

You don’t need a strategy deck. You need a first post.

Then you can:

  • respond to people
  • join existing conversations
  • repost lines and questions from your own work

HOW THREADS CAN SUPPORT YOUR BIGGER AUTHOR ECOSYSTEM

Threads isn’t the whole strategy. It’s a piece of your ecosystem.

It can:

  • give you real-time feedback on hooks, lines, and pain points
  • help you discover other indie authors and readers
  • make it easier to invite people to:
    your newsletter
    your launch team
    your book club

And because it’s tied to your Instagram, it’s a little easier to add than starting from scratch on a totally new platform.
