The Author’s Mic™ with James Fouché: Why Fiction Needs a “Thread of Truth” to Actually Land

The Author’s Mic™ with James Fouché: Why Fiction Needs a “Thread of Truth” to Actually Land

The Real Problem

A lot of indie authors are writing stories that don’t connect.

The idea is there.

The effort is there.

But the story feels flat.

Why This Happens

Because too many authors are writing from imagination alone.

In this episode of The Author’s Mic™, James Fouché explains that his fiction is built on real-life environments and real-world issues:

the drug scene in Cape Town

property crime

gang violence affecting everyday people

His stories are fiction, but they’re grounded in reality.

That’s what gives them weight.

What Most Authors Get Wrong

They think fiction means:

“Make it all up.”

So they:

create characters without context

build plots without consequences

focus on ideas instead of reality

And the result is a story that doesn’t feel believable.

James does the opposite.

He starts with real situations, then builds the story from there.

The Step-by-Step Solution

Step 1 — Identify your “thread of truth”

Ask yourself:

What real-world situation is this story connected to?

If you don’t have a clear answer, stop and figure that out first.

Step 2 — Ground your story in something real

This could be:

something you’ve lived

something you’ve witnessed

something happening in the world

Your story needs a foundation.

Step 3 — Build from consequences

Instead of asking:

“What would be interesting?”

Ask:

“What would actually happen next?”

That’s where real tension comes from.

Step 4 — Let fiction expand reality

Fiction isn’t about escaping truth.

It’s about exploring what could happen if things continue the way they are.

That’s where your story gains power.

Step 5 — Go beyond grammar editing

Editing is not just fixing typos.

You need:

stronger characters

clear narrative flow

real structure

That’s what makes people stay in the story.

What To Do Next

Do this today:

Take your current book or idea

Write down the real-world “thread of truth” behind it

If you don’t have one, find one

Pick ONE scene

Rewrite that scene using:

real stakes

real consequences

a real environment

Don’t rewrite everything.

Start with one scene.
