If you’re sitting there wondering, “Why isn’t my book selling?”—you’re not alone.
Most indie authors hit this moment.
The book is finished. It’s published. It’s live on Amazon.
And then… nothing.
No steady sales. No real traction. No sense that the book is moving.
So the first instinct is to look at the book itself.
Maybe the writing isn’t strong enough.
Maybe the title needs work.
Maybe the cover isn’t right.
That feels logical.
But most of the time, that’s not the problem.
If your book isn’t selling, it’s usually because people aren’t seeing it in the first place.
Not because it’s bad.
Because it’s not showing up anywhere outside of where you put it.
And for most authors, that’s one place.
Amazon.
Why your book isn’t selling on Amazon
Amazon is where people go to buy.
But it’s not designed to introduce your book to new readers unless:
– they’re already searching for something very specific
– or your book is already getting traction
So if your book is only on Amazon, here’s what’s happening:
👉 It exists, but it’s not being discovered
👉 It’s available, but it’s not being seen
That’s the gap.
And that’s why your book isn’t selling.
How to fix it: Put your book where people actually look
If you want your book to sell, it needs to be in more than one place—and each place needs to serve a purpose.
Not everywhere.
Just the right places.
1. Get your book into bookstore and library systems (IngramSpark)
Go to: https://www.ingramspark.com
This is how your book gets beyond Amazon.
When you upload your book to IngramSpark, it gets listed in the catalog that:
– bookstores use to order books
– libraries use to source titles
Without this step, your book does not exist in those systems.
What you’ll need:
– your print-ready interior file (PDF)
– your full cover file (front, spine, back)
– your book details
Once it’s approved, your book becomes orderable outside of Amazon.
That’s a major shift in visibility.
2. Make your book discoverable (Goodreads)
Go to: https://www.goodreads.com
This is where readers look for books.
Not to buy—
to discover.
Here’s what to do:
– Create a free account
– Search your book title
– If it’s there, open it
– If it’s not, click “Add a Book” and enter your details
Then:
– Click your name on the book page
– Claim your author profile
– Add your photo, bio, and website
What to check:
– Your book cover is correct
– Your title and description are accurate
– Your name is linked as the author
Why this matters:
Readers use Goodreads to:
– find what to read next
– track books
– leave reviews
If your book isn’t there, you’re missing that entire layer of visibility.
3. Add a second retail option (Barnes & Noble Press)
Go to: https://press.barnesandnoble.com
This gives your book another place to exist outside Amazon.
What you do:
– Create an account
– Upload the same files you used for print
– Enter your book details
Now you have:
– another storefront
– another link
– another way for readers to find your book
You’re no longer relying on one platform.
What actually makes your book start selling
Getting your book into these places is step one.
But here’s where most authors drop off.
They don’t use them.
If your book is sitting on multiple platforms but you’re not:
– sharing the links
– talking about it consistently
– directing people to those spaces
Nothing changes.
Visibility comes from two things:
👉 Placement (where your book lives)
👉 Repetition (how often people see it)
You need both.
What to do next (keep it simple)
If your book isn’t selling, don’t overhaul it.
Do this instead:
– Get your book into a distribution platform (IngramSpark)
– Make sure it’s listed and claimed on Goodreads
– Add one more retail option like Barnes & Noble
– Start sharing those links consistently
That’s how you move from:
👉 “My book is published”
to
👉 “My book is being seen”
The bottom line
If your book isn’t selling, it’s not automatically a writing problem.
It’s usually a visibility problem.
Fix where your book lives.
Make sure people can actually find it.
Then keep putting it in front of them.
That’s what creates sales.
